German pellet prices rising by double digits in December 2021
The rise in the price of raw materials such as wood chips led to a double-digit percentage increase in the price of pellets in Germany for the first time in December 2021. The German Pellet Institute (DEPI) reports that pellets cost an average of € 303.13 / t for delivery of 6 t. That is an increase of 13.5% compared to the previous month and of 30% year-on-year. The DEPI commented that the increase was not seasonal or demand-related, but was due to distortions on the international timber markets. In addition, longer delivery times can also occur due to the weather. The situation is expected to ease at the end of the first quarter of 2022.
Regarding the pellet price, the following regional differences emerged in December 2021 (decrease: 6 t): In central Germany, pellets cost 294.15 € / t and are, as in the previous month, the cheapest. In northern/eastern Germany the average price is € 302.75 / t, in southern Germany € 305.78 / t.
Larger quantities (26 t) were traded in December 2021 at the following conditions: south: 296.68 € / t, center: 278.09 € / t, north / east: 288.84 € / t.
