On Wednesday, November 17, the European Commission presented three new regulatory initiatives as part of the European Green Deal. Among these initiatives, the Commission published a draft regulation to fight against imported deforestation, which will also apply to timber and timber products.

 

Intense negotiations continue within the European Council and European Parliament towards agreement of a final text of the law "on the making available on the Union market as well as export from the Union of certain commodities and products associated with deforestation and forest degradation".

China imported 30% of its total volume of softwood logs from Europe in 2020 and 2021, thus surpassing supply from Russia and North America.
